Just two matches remain on the sixth Premier League weekend and the relegation battle is already looking a little more interesting that the title race.  On the evidence we’ve seen so far anything close to evens about Man City might look very good indeed if they continue playing the way they are.

There are 20 teams in the Premier League and I don’t think it’s a exaggeration to say that it would come as no surprise to see close to ten serious contenders.

Of course, if Crystal Palace continue without scoring any goals they will go down by default but at the early stage of the season you wouldn’t wanted to have taken short odds about Huddersfield going straight back down – their nine points from six games is very commendable and better than Arsenal, Everton and the seemingly out of control West Ham.

Huddersfield came up to the top flight with Brighton and Newcastle who do battle themselves this afternoon at 4pm in the only Premier League game of the day at the Amex.

It finished 4-1 on aggregate to Newcastle in their two Championship games last season but it’s amazing how the dynamics now change. It’s much easier knocking in goals when you are at the top of the table playing well but nervousness, preservation and the pressure of not dropping points is surely a bigger factor today?

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton said: “As a side and a way that they play, Newcastle are reasonably similar to ourselves and perhaps that is why they were close games last season…

“We are at home and we have to try and capitalise on our home form, but we know that we are up against a very good Newcastle side that are in good form.”

Newcastle have certainly made the more solid start beating West Ham (3-0), Swansea away (1-0) and Stoke (2-1).

Brighton beat West Brom to gain their first Premier League win but it was disappointing that they failed to hold onto a 1-0 lead over south coast rivals Bournemouth (hardly playing great themselves) last Friday – eventually getting beat 2-1.

Brighton have used a smaller pool of players than any other Premier League side this season and will be boosted with the news that captain Bruno has overcome the back problem that caused him to miss the Bournemouth game.
