Rory McIlroy took advantage of perfect playing conditions to shoot a record equalling 63 on the first morning at St Andrews, establishing a two shot lead over Louis Oosthuizen, with Tiger Woods part of a group of players a further two back on four under. The young Irishman’s round of nine below par was good news for Star Spreads as the winning score market had been a popular buy at 288 in the lead up to the tournament.
Tiger claimed to be happy with his new putter despite a bogey on the 17th, while veteran Tom Watson, who enjoyed such a great tournament last year could only manage a one over par 73. That he tied his 10/3 18 holer with Padraig Harrington after going off a nine point underdog will be of small consolation to Tom as he faces the possibilty of a missed cut…
But consolation none the less.
