Preview to the NFL Draft
It’s that time of the year again when everyone starts to think about American Football. The marvel that is the Super bowl is but a distant memory and punters wait to see which teams fare well in the football draft.
Unlike soccer American football tries to promote parity within the organisation by giving the worst team last season the first pick in the draft the following year. This means that if you were the worst team last season you get your pick of all the new players coming out of college. By doing this the bad teams tend to get better over time.
Obviously depending on the quality of players coming out of college the importance of the NFL draft does vary from year to year. The draft would definitely appear to have favoured the Colts in recent years; back in 1998 the Colts drafted Peyton Manning as the first overall pick and he has been one of the best QBs in the league since then.
Now 14 years later the Colts will have the chance to draft Andrew Luck who is thought to be one of the best QB’s ever to play college football. Obviously only time will tell if he is as good as Peyton Manning but it certainly is a favourable position for Indianapolis to be in.
There are years when the first pick in the draft is a mystery and you might have 5 or 10 players to choose from but this year is certainly different, Andrew Luck will almost certainly be the 1st pick in the draft with Robert Griffin III being the 2nd pick. However after the first two picks there are a variety of players who could be picked from 3rd through to 10th.
Obviously when a team is making a pick they have many more aspects to consider apart from which players is the best, the must also consider what they need to make their team better and or what players other teams will need to make their team better. In this way a team can get the best value from their pick by either keeping the pick or trading their pick with another team. The First 10 players in the Draft as I see it are as follows:
- Andrew Luck
- Robert Griffin III
- Ryan Tannehill
- Trent Richardson
- Morris Claiborne
- Matt Kalil
- Justin Blackmon
- Brandon Weeden
- Michael Floyd
- Fletcher Cox
