Sequence is Main Threat to Camelot
Saturday sees the latest running of arguably the biggest race on the flat calendar, the Derby. In my latest betting blog I put up an each way alternative to hotpot Camelot.
Camelot is rightly favourite based on a huge home reputation and a battling victory in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket a few weeks ago; but at around 4/6 he makes no appeal on value grounds and an each way play against him looks the way forward.
The Andrew Balding trained Bonfire is second favourite in all lists after his Dante success at York where he showed battling qualities to fend off the sustained challenge of Ektihaam. I have doubts about the overall strength of that form and also his ability to perform on ground which will in all likelihood be a lot livelier at Epsom than he has encountered in his short career. These question marks make him an easy swerve at his current odds of 5/1.
The one I like at double figure prices is David Lanigan’s Main Sequence. The classy-looking colt is unbeaten in four starts and, on his latest outing, accounted for a decent field when quickening up smartly to win the Lingfield Derby Trial in a fast time. In a less than vintage renewal, I anticipate a big run from Main Sequence this weekend where his ability to travel sweetly and unleash a sharp turn of foot will hopefully help him make the frame at the very least.
