What happened in the American League East?

The American League East is classically known as the best division in baseball, and that probably isn’t any different this year, but the teams that are winning the division certainly are surprising.

A division that has been dominated by the Redsox and the Yankees over the past decade is now being led by the Rays and the Orioles. You could certainly argue that the Rays were expected to be near the top of the division considering their performance in recent years but the Orioles are indeed a shock.

I have been watching and waiting for the Yankees and the Redsox to begin their catch up and for the Orioles to fall away but we are now nearly 50 games into the season and they remain strong but the Orioles still remain the big outsider to win the division at 11/1. Obviously it is an extremely tough division and it will be difficult to remain at the top throughout the season but with the Redsox plagued with injury and with the Yankees struggling it might just be that either the Rays or the Orioles can take a commanding lead and see out a late surge from the Yankees and the Redsox.

If the Orioles stay healthy then they will always be in with a chance to win every game because their home run hitting and fantastic pitching will mean that they will very rarely be out of a game. They are currently 2nd in the American League in home runs scored and 4th in the league in starting pitcher ERA. 11/1 certainly seems generous for a team with such great stats throughout nearly one third of the season.
