5 Greatest Jump Jockeys
Following on from my last blog, where I counted down the 5 greatest flat jockeys of my lifetime, I now turn my attention to the Jumps so here are my top 5 Jump Jockeys I have seen in my lifetime.
Norman Williamson – ‘Stormin Norman’ was as stylish a jumps pilot as I’ve seen and ice cool on the big occasions, racking up numerous big race winners including a memorable Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup double in 1995 aboard Alderbrook and Master Oats.
Adrian Maguire – To my mind the best jockey never to have won the jockeys’ championship; an incredibly strong and tough competitor his career was cut short by injury at 31 depriving us of a superb talent.
Charlie Swan – Champion jockey in Ireland for an incredible 10 consecutive years, Swan holds the Irish record for most winners in a season and will forever be remembered for his association with the brilliant Istabraq.
A P McCoy – An incredible will to win allied with sheer guts and strength. McCoy may lack style but what he doesn’t lack is winners, over 3000 as it stands, and this record breaking phenomenon shows no sign of stopping.
Ruby Walsh – The complete jockey, Ruby has every attribute a top jockey needs and more. An incredible amount of big race wins bears testament to his incredible natural talent. The greatest I have seen.
