Dublin’s Awash with Americans

Hang on what’s going on here? On the flight over to Dublin from Gatwick today I’m not the biggest on the plane – there’s a few taller and loads heavier than my good self which is a rarity.

When I arrived in Dublin the airport was awash with Americans wearing “football” jerseys. The answer is it’s Notre Dame v The US Navy at the Aviva Stadium Dublin in their start to the American college “football” season. (For “football read American football).

It just shows what a big deal college sport is over there as there are 40,000 Americans coming over to Dublin for this. The Navy are bringing punters over on a battleship!

All the Americans in the hotel are saying hi to me and asking where in America I’m from. This is good news for me as it’s renewing my resolve to lose weight and therefore look less American. This is not a rubdown of Americans as I’ve met loads of great ones but the BMIs there are something we can only shoot for over here.

I don’t normally go out on the town on my Dublin trips but I’m curious to have a look at “The Fighting Irish” in action so will have a little wander around town to have a butcher’s at them tonight.

My parents lived in Chicago for a few years and my older brother was born there whereas I was conceived there but born in Portsmouth, hence I can never be President of the U S of A.

This however meant when Channel 4 started showing American football in the 80’s that the Chicago Bears were my team and my all-time favourite player was William “the Refrigerator” Perry. He was a real unit at 6 foot 2 and 27 stone. When he won the Superb Owl it was discovered he had the biggest ring in NFL history at size 25. That’s some ring! Anyhoo I let you know how tonight goes in the fair city of Dublin but is cheerio from me for now.
