Big weekend of football starts in Kingston
Before a feast of Premier League action over the weekend including the showstopping Man U v Arsenal on what really will be a Super Sunday, we first take a detour to Kingston Upon Thames for tonight’s FA Cup clash between AFC Wimbledon and Coventry at the Cherry Red Records Stadium (live on BT Sport).
There’s no head to head records between the two sides – and the first clash between them should be easy, on paper at least, for the visitors in the first round of the FA Cup.
The two sides are heading in vastly different directions but in fairness to Coventry’s off the pitch problems – they are keeping it together well.
They are in 11th spot in League One but that’s after a 10 point penalty for entering administration other wise they would be in fourth spot and well up there with a promotion chasers.
AFC Wimbledon, who ground share with the Kingstonians are in 15th spot in League Two but will come into this match with confidence after coming from behind to beat table topping Rochdale away from home last Saturday.
Coventry City manager Steven Pressley told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:
“I want these players to make a name for themselves in this competition. For the last 26 years since winning it, we have reached the quarter-finals on two occasions, but have progressed one round or less 19 other times.
“The fans of this football club have been starved of relative success, no doubt about it. But they have remained hugely loyal.
“I desperately want our players to repay them for that. Fans have been crying out for heroes for a long time – since 1987 – and it would be nice if this group of players could give them hope again.
“We are under no illusions about how difficult the game is going to be – they are on the back of a very good result against top-of-the-table Rochdale. This is a cup tie, under the the floodlights, live on TV and they will have an intensity about them, so we need to make sure we are ready.”
It could be a proper old fashioned Cup tie tonight and in terms of an interest on Star Spreads the bookings market looks the most interesting. Hard to see there is that much downside to buying the bookings index at around 36 with so much at stake for both side.
