Singing the Blues

Being speechless is probably not a good attribute for a writer to admit to. But I am.

Did I dream that rock bottom Sunderland ended Chelsea’s run of 77 home games unbeaten at Stamford Bridge last night ?

More importantly, have they finally handed the title to Liverpool on a plate, gift wrapped with blue ribbons and bows. Talk about egg on Chelsea’s face. And at Easter too.

Sunderland were value for the win though, they took their chances and who knows they could even use this week’s results as a catalyst for their own survival. What a week for the Mackems – a draw at Man City and a win over Chelsea – both away from home. You seriously couldn’t make it up.

They’ve done enough to earn a musical tribute. From Elvis naturally, Sunderland’s own adopted anthem…….. Can’t Help Falling In Love….. Take it away maestro….

Liverpool still need to do a days work at Carrow Road today in the noon kick off and a win there would suddenly see them five points clear and even longer odds on for the title.

Later on today Everton host Man U (4.10pm, SKY).

Everton won the reverse fixture 1-0 but overall have a poor record against Man U at Goodison – winning just two of their last 18 league games at home.

HEAD TO HEAD RECORD
(Max last 10 only)
Dec 2013 Premier Man Utd 0-1 Everton
Feb 2013 Premier Man Utd 2-0 Everton
Aug 2012 Premier Everton 1-0 Man Utd
Apr 2012 Premier Man Utd 4-4 Everton
Oct 2011 Premier Everton 0-1 Man Utd
Apr 2011 Premier Man Utd 1-0 Everton
Sep 2010 Premier Everton 3-3 Man Utd
Feb 2010 Premier Everton 3-1 Man Utd
Nov 2009 Premier Man Utd 3-0 Everton
Apr 2009 FA Cup Man Utd 0-0 Everton

Everton suffered a disastrous defeat midweek at the hands of Crystal Palace which has handed advantage back to Arsenal in terms of a Champions League spot and it could well be that both Everton and Man U find themselves toughing it out in the Europa League next season.

Everton are unlikely to have captain Phil Jagielka available for this and may find life tough against a Man U side who haven’t played since 9 April and who have the best away record in the league – taking 33 points from their 17 matches.

On what could prove a day of celebration for one half of Merseyside – the other half could be left singing the blues.

A Man U win for me so I’m selling Everton on the Star Spreads superiority market and also buying bookings at 44.
