S.P. Read Esq. A VERY Glorious Goodwood
Our daily columnist and pundit S.P.Read Esq. looks ahead to the second day of GLORIOUS GOODWOOD on Wednesday with a recommended bet on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
What a start!
I had a great start to Glorious Goodwood yesterday when ‘buying’ three horses on Star Spreads and taking advantage of their SP bonus offer in the opener.
Of the three horses I had Sennockian Star WON AT 14/1 and Salutation finished third.
That made it a profit of 159 points on the day to recommended stakes and included 14 BONUS POINTS with Star Spreads !!!
Star Spreads have the same cracking offer today – if you ‘buy’ a horse on any on the GLORIOUS GOODWOOD races you get the SP added to the index if it wins !!! It’s the offer that has applied to just Channel 4 races but extended to cover all races at the meeting.
When you buy horses you are doing so on the market that pays out:
50 points for a WIN
*** PLUS THE SP BONUS ***
30 points for second
20 points for third
10 points for fourth
0 points for unplaced.
The two I like in the opener are:
MADE IN RIO (BUY FOR 3 points at 29)
Scampered home by nine lengths at Ascot last week. Should be able to defy a 3lb penalty.
BROCKWELL (BUY FOR 2 points at 13)
Finished a good third at York last time and might surprise.
Glorious Goodwood and the Galway Festival really get into full swing today but the two feature races are world’s apart when it comes to their respective competitiveness.
The Galway Plate looks as tough as always with 22 runners set to do battle over 2m 6f whereas the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood has only attracted four runners and a red hot favourite in Kingman.
The so-called ‘Duel On The Downs’ looks a little one-sided this year and it’s really hard to try and find any angle into getting Kingman beaten. The only blot on his otherwise exemplary copybook came in the 2000 Guineas when he was beaten by Night Of Thunder – a 40/1 shot. That’s still a real head-scratcher of a result looking at the form both before and after the Guineas.
Kingman has bounced back with impressive successes in both the Irish Guineas and last time out in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot where he got his revenge on Night Of Thunder.
Main challenger here is another Richard Hannon trained rival in the form of Toronado, winner of this race last year and winner of the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on his seasonal reappearance. There’s only 1lb between the pair on official ratings but I think after today we’ll see without doubt Kingman is comprehensively the better racehorse. Kingman can continue the excellent record of three-year-olds in the race.
