S.P. Read Esq. Taking the low road to Ascot

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P.Read Esq. looks ahead to racing at ASCOT on Friday with a view to going low on the distance market with Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

It was a day of winning favourites on Thursday – there’s nothing that punters should like more than the ‘C’ word – consistency. When the ground settles down during high summer the market leaders nearly always seem to take some pegging back.

A glorious afternoon is in prospect at Ascot this afternoon for their unusually ‘retro’ six race card which gets underway at 2.10 and includes a Listed race for fillies and the two mile Brown Jack Stakes. The ground is good to firm, good in places.

Thankfully, at the time of writing, the non runner count isn’t as high as it was yesterday – we saw the feature race at Bath reduced to just two runners.

I had a nice return from selling distances at Sandown on Wednesday. I sold at 10.5 and the final make-up on Star Spreads was only 4.7 so a handy profit of 58 points on the day to the recommended stakes.

I’m tempted to go the same way today at Ascot – the spread is 9-10 lengths which means I am selling at 9 – and therefore looking for an average of 1.5 lengths or less across the six race card.

The opener on the card – the maiden fillies’ event might be the most dangerous race for me with Malabar setting a high standard but also a Godolphin debutant. However, after that the races look competitive enough to hopefully ensure tight finishes.
