It wasn’t that easy for Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City despite eventual wins in their opening games of the new season and it certainly was a disaster for Man U.

It’s now the turn of Chelsea to strut their stuff against newly promoted Burnley in a game that looks one-sided according to the betting.

Chelsea have been boosted by the notable acquisitions of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis which in theory solves Mourinho’s well documented whinges about the strength of his team up front.

So, in other words, there can be no excuses for Chelsea tonight in the first Monday Night Live game on SKY (8pm) at Turf Moor.

The last time these two sides met was in in 2010 when Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners and you have to turn the clock back to 1973 for their last win over Chelsea, a 1-0 victory.

Chelsea are usually quick away from the starting blocks. Their last defeat on the opening day of the season came way back in 1998 when they were beaten 2-1 by Coventry and since then they have enjoyed wins in 13 of 15 opening games.

HEAD TO HEAD
(Maximum 10 games)
Jan 2010 Premier League Burnley 1-2 Chelsea
Aug 2009 Premier League Chelsea 3-0 Burnley
Nov 2008 Carling Cup Chelsea 1-1 Burnley
Apr 1983 Div 2 (old) Burnley 3-0 Chelsea
Dec 1982 Div 2 (old) Chelsea 2-1 Burnley
Mar 1980 Div 2 (old) Chelsea 2-1 Burnley
Oct 1979 Div 2 (old) Burnley 0-1 Chelsea
Jan 1978 FA Cup Chelsea 6-2 Burnley
Apr 1977 Div 2 (old) Burnley 1-0 Chelsea
Nov 1976 Div 2 (old) Chelsea 2-1 Burnley

The biggest plus for Burnley tonight might simply be adrenalin. Opening day of the season, home crowd etc can often count for a lot.

However, they are facing a Chelsea side who have been boosted by a staggering £80 million in the closed season versus Burnley’s £6 million. Money doesn’t always talk in football of course but in this case it is very much David v Goliath.

Predictably, Burnley are favourites for the drop but expect some fight from them tonight and they can make Chelsea pull out the stops.

I’m taking Burnley to do better than the Star Spreads market expects and am therefore selling Chelsea superiority at around 1.35 goals.
