Irrespective of what happens at the Etihad tonight, Liverpool have already stolen the back page headlines tomorrow with the confirmation today that they have signed Mario Balotelli from AC Milan.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t registered in time to play against his former side tonight which could have been the icing on the cake on what already looks a mouthwatering Bank Holiday fixture.

The last six encounters between these Premier League giants have all seen close games with never more than one goal separating the two sides:

(Maximum 10 games)
Apr 2014 Premier Liverpool 3-2 Man City
Dec 2013 Premier Man City 2-1 Liverpool
Feb 2013 Premier Man City 2-2 Liverpool
Aug 2012 Premier Liverpool 2-2 Man City
Jan 2012 Carling Cup Liverpool 2-2 Man City
Jan 2012 Carling Cup Man City 0-1 Liverpool
Jan 2012 Premier Man City 3-0 Liverpool
Nov 2011 Premier Liverpool 1-1 Man City
Apr 2011 Premier League Liverpool 3-0 Man City
Aug 2010 Premier League Man City 3-0 Liverpool

Both sides got their new campaigns off to a winning start. Man City beating Newcastle 2-0 and Liverpool beating Southampton.

If the stats from last season are to be repeated we should be in for a cracker. City had the best record at home and Liverpool the joint-best away record.

It’s the kind of stats that can often end up cancelling each other out – but we should really expect goals here.

TEAM NEWS:

Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Clichy, Fernando, Yaya Toure, Nasri, Silva, Jovetic, Dzeko

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Moreno, Skrtel, Lovren, Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge.

There is still no start for Aguero despite his goal against Newcastle but he is on the bench.

I think there will be goals and I think the first one will come early so will be selling time of the first goal market on Star Spreads at 32 minutes.
