Always an interesting time for spread betting on distances at the races.

The ground changes and so do the spreads – upwards – in the anticipation of bigger winning margins.

Brighton is a classic case in point. The course more often than not throws up close finishes. I put it in the same bracket as Epsom. There’s something about the up-hill finishes and camber at these tracks that seem to conspire towards tight finishes.

However, buyers of distances today at Brighton (where the ground is now soft) are being asked to buy at around 17 on the eight race card.

Even with the ground being soft I wouldn’t be confident of averaging over two lengths per race as a buyer, although the two non handicap races on the card both have odds-on favourites.

Buying at Tipperary at 31 on the jumps card looks far more attractive. Although the ground is yielding this is a seven race card that could easily throw up some wide margin winners and I’ll certainly be looking to get off to a good start with the Willie Mullins trained hotpot Morning Run in the opener who bids to win her first start over hurdles having been unbeaten in three bumpers.
