Not exactly a bad double header on Saturday for armchair fans with Spurs v Arsenal at 12.45pm (BT SPORT) and the 5.30pm (SKY) Merseyside derby at Goodison.

I’m not sure Liverpool are playing great football at the moment but they are getting the results. Classic case being midweek in the FA Cup when they came from 1-0 down (at 85 minutes) to beat Bolton 2-1 without even the need for extra time….. and what a costly result for me that game was :(

In contrast, Everton are not playing great football and NOT getting the results with a defence that is leaking goals. The Toffees have now conceded 17 goals in their 11 home fixtures this season – an average of 1.5 goals

There are only five places between them in the table, in Liverpool’s favour, but a gulf of 12 points and Everton could easily get sucked into a relegation battle.

The bookings markets could get interesting here. Always a tough, frenetic fixture for refs and Saturday’s man in black (or yellow !) is Anthony Taylor who is already on an average of 4.5 yellow cards per game this season. There were seven yellows in a dramatic 3-3 draw in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison – which was as long ago as November 2013.

Card players might also like to know that the Merseyside derby has produced a record 20 red cards in the Premier League although there has not been a sending off in the last seven derbies in league and cup.

Aaron Lennon who joined the club on loan from Tottenham on the final day of the transfer window could make his debut for Everton while James McCarthy is expected to return after six weeks out with a hamstring injury.

For Liverpool, Daniel Sturridge is expected to make his first club start since August while there are injury doubts over Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana and Lucas.

Surely Gerrard will make an appearance (at some point) on what will be his final Merseyside derby before moving to LA ?
