S.P.Read Esq: Sensational Sporting Saturday

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to a tremendous day of sport on Saturday which includes the EPSOM DERBY. FRENCH TENNIS LADIES FINAL, CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL and the BELMONT STAKES and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

As sporting days go this just about has the lot.

Djokovic and Murray fighting it out for a place in the French Open Final, the Ladies Final at Roland Garros, the Derby at Epsom this afternoon, the Champions League final tonight and late night racing action Stateside as American Pharoah bids for Triple Crown glory and to become the first since Affirmed in 1978 and 12th Triple Crown winner of all time.

… and I haven’t even mentioned more heats of the Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon !!

Where on earth to start ????

It would be tempting to ignore all of them and say ‘I really fancy one in the Hexham seller’ but how on earth can I not get involved in the main action ?

Let’s start with a summary:

WILLIAMS will win the French Open
GOLDEN HORN will win the Derby
BARCELONA will win the Champions League
AMERICAN PHAROAH will win the Belmont Stakes

So that’s sorted then but no awards for originality I hear you cry with all four being favourites for their respective events but as much as I like opposing favourites, sometimes, when the credentials are so solid you need to pay heed.

Let’s put a little more flesh on the bones:

FRENCH OPEN

Williams was lethargic and ill in the semi-final but found a way to beat Bacsinszky. She should be a lot more refreshed for this final and should overpower Safarova who took time to get her game going in her semi-final win against Ivanovic. Crucially, Williams holds an 8-0 head to head record over Safarova – two of those wins coming on clay.

THE DERBY

The Dante was always going to be the key trial for this year’s Classic and the John Gosden trained winner can maintain his unbeaten record here and end Aidan O’Brien’s recent domination. Golden Horn should relish the extra distance and quick ground which has gone against several including Elm Park.

BARCELONA

Barcelona are so hard to look beyond in Germany tonight and the combined force of Messi, Neymar and Suarez should again prove potent and Barcelona are likely to make a move early in the game as they so often do. Both teams won their domestic leagues but Chiellini’s injury leaves Juventus with a problem in defence.

BELMONT STAKES

So many have tried and failed but American Pharoah looks set to end the drought of Triple Crown winners since Affirmed in 1978. The 1m 4f trip is very much considered a marathon trip in American racing terms which is why it catches so many out on the dirt but American Pharoah comes into this having beaten all his rivals previously and given every indication he will see out the trip.

A small loss on the distances trade at Epsom yesterday which made up at 10.95.

Which one to go with for the bet ? I think I have to go to the Champions League a be a buyer of bookings on Star Spreads at a very generous starting point of 44. I was expecting it to be 60+.
