SPreadGlorious Goodwood and day two of the Galway Festival. Not exactly a bad punting day !

I had a good day yesterday with the buy of distances at Galway. It certainly never hurts to have a 16 length winner in the opener !!

The ground is drying a little today at Galway but good to soft for the opening day on the Sussex Downs when there are two Group 2 races on the card.

Both look good punting contests but I am drawn towards the Qatar Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs at 3.10pm. It’s down to a seven runner race after the defection of Absolutely So, Glory Awaits and Limato.

Clearly proven ability to handle the underfoot conditions is paramount and this certainly shouldn’t be a problem for the favourite Toormore who won the Vintage Stakes over course and distance as a two-year-old on good to soft ground. He’s been campaigned over a mile of late – at the highest level too. His last three races have all been in Group 1’s and he hasn’t been beaten far in any of them – notably finishing a neck second to stable companion Night Of Thunder in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. The drop back to seven furlongs isn’t likely to hinder him, in fact quite the opposite – I think it is a positive and he looks a solid favourite to make up for his defeat in the race last year when pipped a neck by Es Que Love.

There’s more of a going question mark over Dutch Connection who has one piece of form on good to soft ground at Haydock where he was second to Faydhan as a two-year-old. However, he was beaten six lengths that day and I’m not convinced that he will be as effective with juice in the ground. He is a previous course winner here though which is always a positive around this unique circuit.

The remainder are mainly taking a step-up in class including Ascription who was runner-up in a Group 3 at Haydock last time out.

In summary, Toormore looks a solid day one bet and I am buying him on the Star Spreads 50/25/10 index which means it’s money back if he’s second and a profit for the win. I am not contemplating any other outcome 😉
