S.P.Read Esq: Cork Tuesday

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the racing on Tuesday evening from CORK and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

SPreadVery average flat cards at Catterick and Salisbury on Tuesday afternoon with the pick of the action at Cork tonight with a Group and Listed race on the card.

Much was made of Dermot Weld’s apparent ‘poor’ form at Galway. He was however completing his 29th top trainer title from the last 30 years and ended the meeting with five winners !!!

Although Willie Mullins trained eight winners – Weld won by virtue of the points system which rewards placed horses as well.

Whilst Weld didn’t set the Festival alight this year – the simple fact is that he has set the bar so high, year after year, that it is becoming impossible to keep bettering his record.

Amongst his winners he did have a couple of potential stars on his hand. Debutant Almela won the penultimate race at the meeting by a staggering 19 lengths and earlier in the week Time To Inspire looked good when winning his maiden by 10 lengths.

I think Weld has another potential superstar on his hands tonight with Eshera in the Platinum Stakes (Listed) at 7.00.

She was a beaten favourite on debut but went into my (and countless others no doubt) notebook when storming home at the Curragh by seven and a half lengths last month under nothing more than a hands and heels ride. Just for good measure the distant runner-up Aimhirgin Lass won next time out at Killarney.

It’s obviously a step-up in class tonight but she is up against mainly exposed rivals with the exception of In My Pocket. The John Oxx trained runner made a winning debut at Navan beating Cenotaph who has been beaten twice subsequently.

I think Eshera could win really well and with an odds-on favourite in the opening maiden the card looks ripe for buying distances at around 13 with Star Spreads.
