S.P.Read Esq: Laytown races

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the racing on Thursday at LAYTOWN and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

SPreadThey’re racing on the beach this afternoon at Laytown with their annual meeting getting underway when the tide goes out at 4.10pm.

There’s a tremendous history behind racing at Laytown which dates as far back as 1868 but technology catches up to some degree today when starting stalls will replace the flag starts for the first time.

All the races are run over 6f or 7f and the meeting frequently attracts a crowd of over 10,000.

Trevor Harris, senior trader at Star Sports fixed odds, reported early money today for Our Max in the finale which looks an interesting move. Buckets (and spades) of money if you like for the seaside pick !

Our Max won the maiden race on the card last year so clearly likes the sea air but has done precious little since, held back by his handicap mark no doubt.

It certainly would be no surprise to see him bounce back to form here and Patrick Mullins onboard is an obvious positive.

Usa also a good record at Laytown but has been chasing recently so it’s possible he may have lost some speed in exchange for stamina.

Talented Kid is the best in, if the official ratings are to be believed, but he has only won once in 17 starts and has only recently joined his new stable from Mark Johnston’s yard.

Overall on the card I am a buyer of distances at 8.75 with Star Spreads. Although the racing looks very competitive there shouldn’t be too much downside at that price. The meeting last year made up at 10.3 lengths.
