S.P.Read Esq: France v Romania (Euro 2016 Friday)

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the start of Euro 2016 with Friday’s match between FRANCE v ROMANIA and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

In time-honoured fashioned the Euros kick off with the host nation first out of the blocks – this time France who host Romania in the Group A opener.

Possibly ominously, the last time France hosted the tournament, in 1984, they won it and also lifted the trophy in 2000 when it was hosted in Belgium / Netherlands.

But now, just like Eurovision, it’s an expanded format with a 24-team structure and a tournament that’s not immune from a shock winner.

It’s also fair to say that this isn’t a French side as good as they were back in 2000 but they should receive the usual boost from playing in front of their home crowd and will be anxious to start with a win at the Stade de France.

French coach Didier Deschamps lifted the World Cup with France as their captain 18 years ago and said: “What is an easy draw? An easy draw is when you have won the matches, that is all,” he told French newspaper La Depeche.

He added: “I suppose you are going to tell me that we could have got more renowned opponents. Romania are not flashy, is that it? But they didn’t qualify by accident, and neither did Albania nor Switzerland. We will be ready. We have been preparing for two years.”

Romania come into this on the back of a 5-1 win over Georgia on Saturday and have always put up a good battle against France as our head to head record stats below show (four draws from their last five games).

Plenty of pressure on France but they have great assets up front in the shape of Antoine Greizmann, Anthony Martial and Olivier Giroud.
