The third goal arrived nice and early at Anfield last night to give the P&L a turbo boost.

Premier League football starts early this week with the south coast derby between Bournemouth and Brighton on Friday but before that we have the small matter of Arsenal’s adventures in Europe with their home tie against FC Cologne tonight in the Europa League.

Both sides like to ship goals and I’m not sure it will be a case of one side cancelling each other out – I think there will be plenty of goals.

The Gunners have suffered two defeats from their first four Premier League games whereas tonight’s visitors Cologne have lost all three of their Bundesliga games by an aggregate of 7-1 and prop up the table.

It’s easy to see why Arsenal are hot favourites but it’s not totally straightforward given Arsene Wenger is resting a stack of first team regulars ahead of Sunday’s visit to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

Petr Cech, Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka, Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette have all been left out of the squad.

Better news for Arsenal backers is that Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere could well play a part.

Horrible feeling this game could be trappy (when is it an anything else with Arsenal?) but they should see off a Cologne side in wretched form and I’m repeating last night’s trade of a sell of the third match goal – again at 71 minutes with Star Spreads.
