Surely something has to give tonight between Everton and West Ham – 17th plays 18th in the table with both sides in atrocious form?

As regular readers will know, I want to be against Everton at every juncture at the moment and am in no rush to cancel the standing order right now.

The big dilemma for punters is which side is the least worse? Everton have won just one of their last 12 games (across all competitions) whilst West Ham have won just one of their last 14 Premier League away games.

Both sides are under new managers – in the case of Everton, Sam Allardyce’s reported signing today will come too soon for tonight’s game and David Unsworth will remain in charge for one final game in his caretaker capacity.

I was reminded by a colleague today that Unsworth was a very short price at one stage to get the job on a full-time basis but his tenure couldn’t have gone much worse with just one win from seven games.

Unsworth threw plenty of light on the current mood of the dressing room by saying: “Sometimes players will take the easy way out and shirk responsibility. I’m asking players to perform. I think when you’re in a tough moment, in this day and age, the mentality of players isn’t what it used to be.

“I just want the players to be ready for a fight. I will stand side-to-side with them if they give me that attitude.

“Those players who have not got the bottle to stand up for the fight need to be honest and say it.”

David Moyes hasn’t exactly made the best start at the Hammers as he comes face to face with his former club. Everton are shipping goals at an alarming rate and I think that given the respective defences tonight there could well be plenty of goals contrary to what the market expects. Last season’s two games only produced just goals but I fancy things to be different tonight.
