The World Cup is just around the corner and Gareth Southgate’s men are putting the finishing touches to their preparation with warm-up matches against Nigeria and Costa Rica.

The Three Lions tournament record will come under inevitable scrutiny but their results in friendlies are more than impressive. Since qualifying for the World Cup, they have taken draws from Brazil, Germany and Italy whilst they beat Holland for good measure, and even under Roy Hodgson, there was a draw against Spain and a 2-0 victory against France.

The Super Eagles will not be a pushover, however. This is a talented Nigeria side that has a touch of the Golden Generation with Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho making a fearsome front three that should be familiar to both punters and fans alike. The extra freedom that Moses has in comparison to his role at Chelsea has seen him score 11 goals in 32 internationals and the movement that Iwobi and Iheanacho give makes for a potent mix.

Just ask Argentina, who were beaten 4-2 by Nigeria in a friendly last year. In 2018 they’ve also beaten Poland (1-0) and Serbia (2-0) so don’t expect them to be pushovers at any point here.

The 2/5 about England with starsports.bet does not make appeal even at Wembley given that Southgate is sure to try a few new things with less than a fortnight until England’s opener against Tunisia in Russia.

Southgate’s team also doesn’t score a whole lot, or at least less than England under Hodgson – they put just 18 in the net on the way to Russia compared to 31 for the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016 – and Nigeria have been compact this year too.

HEAD TO HEAD RECORD
(Maximum 10 matches)
Jun 2002 WORLD CUP NIGERIA 0-0 ENGLAND
Nov 1994 FRIENDLY ENGLAND 1-0 NIGERIA

Under 2.5 goals has landed in Nigeria’s friendlies with Poland, Serbia and Congo DR since March and it could be the right way to go in what might be a cagey game.

A sell of total goals at 2.4 minutes with Star Spreads looks the call.
