The first weekend of any new Premier League season is normally a fight between expensively assembled new sides after the summer transfer window. But when Newcastle host Tottenham on Saturday you’d be forgiven for thinking you were watching a replay of last season – especially as Spurs have brought nobody in during the window for the first time since 2003.
Newcastle’s transfer window hasn’t been all that rosy either, with six players signed and only one defencive arrival in the shape of Fabian Schar. The Swiss operator is a nice arrival but Newcastle rely heavily on their defence – they conceded just 47 goals last season – and the open warfare between Rafa Benítez and Mike Ashely came to a head on Thursday when he was rebuffed in his attempts to bring in a deadline day signing after being ‘offered assurances that he could sign a centre-back and a left-back.’
Spurs fans are frustrated with the complete lack of additions, although their prospects for the season should be bright if injuries are kind considering that they were third last season and much of this side showed their skill at the World Cup.
Harry Kane took the Golden Boot and was a key part of the England side that went to the semi-finals with Kieran Tripper, Eric Dier and Dele Alli all thriving on the biggest stage whilst Hugo Lloris was exceptional for France as they took the glory. Heung-Min Son was South Korea’s best player and Christian Eriksen impressed for Denmark whilst Davidson Sanchez had a strong tournament for Colombia.
However, many of them will not be starting after a long campaign at the World Cup – about three or four of them can be expected to play – and this could see a rather conservative approach. Expect Lucas Moura, the scorer of four pre-season goals, to start

Newcastle’s home games last season saw some big results, but they did not get involved in thrillers. 37% of their games on Tyneside last year saw over 2.5 goals, a fair way below the league average of 51%. This could take a while to get going.
