Villain's Day Out at Fontwell
Three race meetings for us to enjoy this Tuesday afternoon. All-Weather action from Southwell (12.00 start), action up north from Sedgefield and a chance to see the unique figure of eight circuit at Fontwell Park.
An eight race card on the fibresand today from Southwell gets under way at 12 noon with the six furlong handicap. Wellmarked makes the journey over from Ireland to contest this and do remember the stable are not averse to turning out a winner or two on the all-weather. Yours represents the Kevin Ryan team who have an admirable 35% in handicaps here at Suddy. Royston trainer John Jenkins (never missed with juvenile hurdlers 1980s) turns out the course specialist Monsieur Jamie to contest the first divide of the sprint handicap at 1.00 and, if he can overcome his dislike of the starting stalls, he should go close.
Watch for Mecox Bay in the one mile six handicap; he attracted all the right money on his latest start at Wolverhampton and might just try to make all in today’s contest. Decana, in the same race, is significantly the only mount on the card for Jimmy Fortune today. Final mention for that Suddy regular Elusive Warrior in the seven furlong handicap (3.30). He looks for a ninth course and distance win this afternoon and will be ably assisted in the saddle by champion apprentice Martin Harley, fresh from steering home the good thing Sovento at Lingers yesterday.
National Hunt action up north at Sedgefield where the opening mare’s novice hurdle may go the way of the Nicky Richards-trained Hannah Jacques, given the stable have a 100% strike rate in novice hurdles here this season. Evan Williams saddles top weight Mickmacmagoogle in the two mile handicap hurdle at 1.50. What a servant he has been for connections, winning thirteen races so far in a fifty three race career. Danny Cook rides the track well and comes here for one mount only in this same race, Ibrox, who could be worth a cursory market check.
Any Given Moment landed a nice touch for Berwickshire trainer Sandy Thompson at Musselburgh yesterday and, if turning out again in the two-mile five handicap at 2.50, will be hard to beat. Final mention on the card for Phoenix Lady in the two and a half mile novice handicap. The mare is trained by Chris Grant whose handicap hurdlers have performed at a 33% level for the season to date.
Each way villains will be out in force for the opening juvenile hurdle at Fontwell Park where the object of the grand larceny will be Colebrooke, who looks an each-way knock in a race where Secret Edge looks the one to beat. Do make sure that all eight go to post in this, seven or less and the mission is called off . “Eagle to Brown Owl, cancel message, I repeat, cancel message and return to base immediately”.
Hunt Ball landed a massive touch on his latest start at Folkestone and will be fancied to follow up in the two mile four handicap chase at 2.10 under a mandatory seven pound penalty. Watch also for the 8 horse Kapplehoff, Mattie Batchelor’s only mount on he card today and a horse that is looking for a sixth course win this afternoon.
Paddy Brennan travels for one mount only also, Caspar Of Tarsus, in the long distance handicap at 3.10 while Tom Scudamore is another jockey who can afford a late lunch today as his only mount of the day is Ladyvie in the two and a half mile handicap at 3.40.
