Liverpool v Spurs (4pm, Sunday)
Good result for the column yesterday with an 36 point profit from the MAN U / VILLA supremacy bet.
This could easily be the weekend that Liverpool ‘earn’ six points from just one game as surely the way the results fell yesterday was worth at LEAST six points.
In his wildest dreams Brendan Rodgers couldn’t have predicted a win for Crystal Palace over Chelsea and a draw which didn’t really help Arsenal or Man City that much.
It leaves Liverpool with the chance to go top – a win would send them two points clear of Chelsea but Man City would be ‘theoretical leaders’ by one point if they can convert their two games in hand to wins.
However, as we saw yesterday, games in hand don’t always translate to wins – even against the likes of Crystal Palace. Liverpool will also need to play a lot better than they did when struggling midweek to get past Sunderland 2-1.
The biggest problem for Liverpool today might indeed be the sense of expectation. So far this season they have been flying very quietly under the radar – doing their own thing when everyone was talking about Man City, Chelsea and for quite a while Arsenal as well.
At 4pm this afternoon the spotlight is firmly on Liverpool at Anfield and even a draw would be good enough to send them top of the table.
This is no formality however, as Spurs (sixth in the table) have plenty to play for and nothing less than three points for them will keep alive their slim chances of a top four finish. However, when the pair last met it was very much one way traffic….
