Remember the ‘Disgrace of Gijon’ ??

It was back in 1982 when Germany controversially beat Austria 1-0 – the result needed to guarantee both sides progression to the knock out stage of the World Cup and one which also condemned Algeria.

32 years have passed since then but there could still be some ‘needle’ between the two sides.

The odds clearly favour Germany – the side with the World Cup heritage but, with the risk of repeating the obvious, the European sides are all struggling and France made hard work of being Nigeria earlier today.

Germany have pretty much a superlative record when it comes to the World Cup.

They have only once failed to reach the last eight in their 17 previous tournaments and head into this having topped Group G.

Algeria finished second to Belgium in Group H having secured a draw against Russia in their latest match. This is the first time they have reached the final 16 in their fourth World Cup.

They have however beaten (West) Germany in just two previous matches:

HEAD TO HEAD RECORD
Jan 1964 Friendly Algeria 2 Germany 0
Jun 1982 World Cup Algeria 2 Germany 1

I’m tempted by total goals on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting. Algeria have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches and there’s a good chance there could be plenty of goals here. I’m a buyer at around 3.2.
