S.P. Read Esq. Bath distances

Our daily columnist and pundit S.P.Read Esq. has a bet with Star Spreads on the BATH DISTANCES this afternoon.

After the excitement of the World Cup and thankfully a good result in the Final I’m back to relative normality this week and looking forward to the Open.

Racing first though and I am tempted by the distances market on Star Spreads today at Bath which is currently being traded at 8.8-9.8.

It’s a seven race card on firm ground – Bath is the only course in the country where they are unable to water.

It’s a general rule of thumb that distances tend to be exaggerated on softer ground – but I would go further than that and say ‘extremes of ground’. Firm can be considered extreme these days as clerks don’t like to present anything other than good to firm ground.

There are also small fields at Bath this afternoon and whilst all seven races are handicaps, and five of those over sprint trips I still think there is a realistic chance of us getting more than 9.8 lengths so I am a buyer and am therefore looking at an average of 1.4 lengths per race.
