S.P. Read Esq. Switching to high at Ascot
Our daily columnist and pundit S.P.Read Esq. looks ahead to racing at ASCOT on Saturday with a view to going HIGH on the distance market with Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
Damn rain.
The heavens opened yesterday at Ascot and I am sure that was partly responsible for the extended winning distances bet which scuppered my lay of the distance market on Star Spreads.
Back to Ascot today for King George day and the big question is what will the ground be ?
The thunderstorm caught everyone out on Friday – not least of which the course themselves who swiftly moved the official going from good to firm to good to soft.
However, in many peoples eyes this was too dramatic a change and certainly not backed up by the subsequent winning times.
The answer, as always, seems to be blowing in the wind, my friend, when it comes to getting accurate going descriptions.
It’s been a drying morning at the track so far today but the official ground remains good to soft, good in places.
The big race is of course the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 3.50. It looks a good renewal of the great race which has seen the older horses dominate in recent years.
John Gosden will be hopeful of bucking that stat as he trains all three of the three-year-old challenge this year, the most exciting of which has to be Taghrooda after her runaway success in the Oaks.
If you want to crab that form you can say that the form is not working out particularly well since but Taghrooda remains unbeaten and is preferred to the colt Eagle Top.
Both may struggle against Telescope however who is my marginal preference for the race.
Looking at the card overall I think there maybe some juice on the buying side on distances. Star Spreads have set the buy price at 10.8 (1.54 average per race) which tempts me in.
There are three non handicaps on the card which I’ll look to for the best margins and whilst the handicaps look trappy there is a lady riders handicap and these races can often produce wide margin winners.
