S.P.Read Esq: Wimbledon Mens’ Final
Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the second Mens’ Final at Wimbledon between NOVAK DJOKOVIC v ROGER FEDERER and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
And so the Gentlemen’s Singles Final comes down to number 1 seed playing number 2 seed.
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will slug it out (for the 40th time) on Centre Court.
Federer leads on the head-to-head – but only by a short head – it’s 20 v 19 in favour of the Swiss man but crucially it’s one a piece on their previous meetings on grass.
Federer has re-written much of the record books in tennis but there’s one really important record up for grabs on SW19 today. If he wins his eighth Wimbledon title – he will stand alone as the winning-most champion at Wimbledon. He currently shares the record with William Renshaw and Pete Sampras.
It’s also a repeat of last year’s final which Djokovic won 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to take his second Wimbledon crown.
Djokovic is the marginal favourite for the renewal but with Federer playing so well this tournament I am leaning towards him making it number eight. He was incredible against Andy Murray on Friday who did little wrong the in their semi-final and was overcome by moments of sheer brilliance from Federer who sauntered to a straight sets victory in a match in which he was the OUTSIDER to win! Federer sparkled with 20 aces, just one double fault, 56 winners and 11 unforced errors.
Federer said after the Murray win: “Definitely one of the best matches I’ve played in my career. I served very well. I served a very high first‑serve percentage plus going big. So definitely it was one of my best serving days of my career, for sure.”
Incredibly Federer has only had his serve broken once in the entire tournament, against Gilles Simon in the quarter finals.
Djokovic has shown signs of getting rattled in this tournament, berating himself, scowling up at the players box and screaming TOWEL at a ball girl during his match with Kevin Anderson. Perhaps showing that all is not as relaxed as it should be with the defending champion who is feeling the pressure. Early Fed pressure could see even more implosions from the Serb.
It’s more of a coin toss than the coin toss at the start of the match but I’m cheering home Fed. One for the old boys !!!
