Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the second day of the YORK EBOR MEETING and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
Crazy old day at York on Tuesday with a result that stunned even the usual after-timing merchants.
The search is still on across punterland to find anyone who backed 50/1 Arabian Queen to beat Golden Horn. In lottery terms – it was a rollover.
Needless to say Gleneagles didn’t turn up (again) which was a huge anti-climax for both the York crowd and racing in general.
The going remains good to soft at the Knavesmire ahead of the day two action and further heavy rain is predicted later in the week.
11 fillies go to post for today’s feature race, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at 3.40pm and unlike yesterday’s main event it looks a competitive betting heat.
There’s plenty of collateral form on offer but there can be little doubt that the biggest improver in the race is the Hugo Palmer trained Covert Love who bids to extend her unbeaten sequence to five.
Amazing to think that she was only fifth of 12 on debut at Lingfield last season when going off a 33/1 chance and still looked in need of the race first time out this season when winning her maiden at Chelmsford.
Since then she has been a revelation – winning a handicap at York, a Listed race at Newcastle and then hitting the jackpot with her win in the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh last time out over today’s trip and similar ground.
On that evidence she should again account for Jack Naylor and Curvy who were second and third.
The race has a strong international contingent including the Irish 1000 Guineas winner Pleascach and the French raider Sea Calisi who is hard to assess but looked good when winning a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud last time out.
A small profit yesterday from the buy of distances on Star Spreads (bought 9.5 closed 10.05) and very much got Mayfair Lady to thank for that one after she stormed home by five lengths in the finale.
Today, I’m keeping it simple and going with Covert Love on the Star Spreads 50/25/10 index. I’m buying at 20 so need a top two finish for profit.
