S.P.Read Esq: York Day Three
Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the third day of the YORK EBOR MEETING and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
A profit yesterday of 100 points on Star Spreads with the buy of Covert Love who finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks.
Ben Keith from sister company Star Sports touched on an important point in his latest blog – ‘pickers and choosers’. (BEN’S BLOG LINK)
It’s the punters secret weapon – choice – and unlike a bookmaker, the punter doesn’t have to have a view on every single event taking place around the globe 24 hours a day.
Star Spreads have to. They need to price up every race, every match from every corner of the world not to mention every corner from every match, every golfer from some far flung tournament etc etc. As punters we have the choice of the play button, the pause putton or the stop button.
In the case of Acapulco this afternoon – the big race favourite for the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes the market makers have a real dilemma. Instinct must be to want to oppose her on the basis that the ground has gone against her but……….
We don’t know…..
Nobody knows…..
…. IF her phenomenal speed will be blunted by the rain softened ground at the Knavesmire or, hold this thought for a moment, she COULD be even better on it !!
Trevor Harris, senior trader for Star Sports fixed odds is certainly in no mood to get too carried away on the price of Acapulco and is seeing more positives than negatives with her chances saying: “The weight concession is clearly massive and there is every chance the course could suit her better than Ascot with it favouring the front runners this week. Backers will know their fate within the first couple of furlongs and I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable much further going north than 9/4.”
She certainly looked a monster when winning the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and as the sole two-year-old in this race gets a mighty weight concession of 27lb which includes her 3lb fillies allowance as the cherry on top of the cake !!!
Her trainer Wesley Ward (pictured) told the Racing Post: “She’s in fantastic form and we’re ready to go. She’s been wonderful since Ascot. There were a couple of other races for her – we could have gone for the Prix Morny – but this race is sponsored by Coolmore and with the weight break and how fast she is this was the target. It’s always a concern taking on older horses but that 27lb is a massive amount.”
The only Acapulco bet I would really want to have in this race is on her NOT finishing second or third. I really do think it’s a case of her romping home or tailing off (sorry, I know that’s not much help !!).
Trainer William Haggas has already had four York winners this week and trains the second favourite Muthmir but this one has been found wanting at Group 1 level in the past and is far from certain to like the ground.
A better play for me is on the distances with Star Spreads. I can buy at 8 and that looks good. It could be brilliant if Acapulco romps home. But we’re back to that two letter word again……… if.
