S.P.Read Esq: Newmarket
Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to the first day of the NEWMARKET CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING and finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.
Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting gets underway this afternoon on good to soft ground.
Great to have Ryan Moore back in the saddle after his injury in July. Moore has one ride today, on Peterhof in the Arkle Finance Handicap.
It’s an eight race card and the feature race is the Somerville Tattersall Stakes at 3.40 for which seven runners now go to post in the absence of Orvar and Rouleau.
It looks an open betting renewal and has European interest with Jim Bolger sending over Sanus Per Aquam and Lawmaking representing France and Andre Fabre.
Some of these two-year-olds have already been kept quite busy but my eyes are drawn to the horse with the least experience.
The Clive Cox trained Zonderland bolted home on his Kempton debut, winning by five lengths and this race was immediately targeted.
Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park Stud, said: “He was very impressive at Kempton, but Clive Cox always thought a lot of him early on. Taking on two winners off level weights and to win in the style he did was very impressive. He looks great and he has come out of the race in great shape.”
It’s obviously a huge leap in class but I’m going to give him my vote.
There are a host of dangers including the William Haggas trained Tasleet who stayed on well to win a big field event at York last time out. Lawmaking was only narrowly beaten in a Group 3 at Longchamp last time out and should continue to improve on only his third start.
Elsewhere on the Newmarket card, John Gosden looks to have strong chances of a double through Linguistic in the opener and Flying Officer in the two miler who was second in the race last year and stormed home recently at Salisbury.
The distances make some appeal, buying at 14 with Star Spreads. The rain softened ground will help as horses always need to be kept up to their work to win here at Newmarket. There’re a couple of short priced favourites on the card, a two miler and only five in the closing handicap – all of which should help on the distance project.
