It's Poets day today !
A Friday evening rush up to Dundalk for a splendid seven race card commencing at 6.30.It’s a hard life, I do so want to see Newbury this afternoon and I reckon if I leave Dublin after the bumper I should hit Dundalk at around half five, that’s assuming I don’t get hampered by Dublin’s legendary Friday afternoon rush hour.Every one leaves town early today. It’s what they call Friday in the Dublin offices,POETS day, which roughly translated means ‘P*** off early tomorrow’s Saturday’ or words to that effect.Whatever happened to the work ethic?.The Celtic tiger has us ruined!
Racing opens with a six furlong handicap, a race where old timer Richelieu has been given every chance to score his first win since 2009.He races today off 49, compared to a life time high off 75 a few years back.Statue Of Dreams is another to factor in,he runs here off a mark some 8 pounds lower than his turf rating.Final mention for Desert Al another horse pitched in on his old form.
Jim Goldie sends Gordonsville over for the two mile handicap at 6.55.A consistent client in the UK where he has shown a liking for Musselburgh, a venue where he recently won over hurdles.Deutschland is another I like here,he won at this track in 2009 and runs here off a fast plumetting 80 mark.Willie Mullins never misses a trick when it comes to spotting an opportunity, thats why he’s our champion national hunt trainer!
The juvenile distaff at 7.25 looks at the mercy of Choral Society who finished a highly respectable third to Stunning Silence and Wave here at Dundalk on her latest outing.Market watch recommended here in relation to the chances of the Bolger first timer Dinara and the Halford trained Tawariyka.
Aloof is entitled to go off a short priced favourite in the one mile maiden at 7.55.Wachman’s filly ran into a snorter when second to Wading here at Dundalk on her latest start and remember what that winner went on to do.Give up? .She only won the Rockfel’s at Newmarket ,wow! Shukhov appears to be the danger and looks an opportunity for those who like to ‘half-inch’ a few quid in the place markets.
Onto the 8.20 a ten furlong maiden where the chances of Azores are obvious enough. She was unfortunate to run into a rejuvenated Glor Na Mara on her latest start and given a safe passage here she should be good enough to be involved at the finish.Consider also the chances of Gaiety Theatre, named after a well known Dublin playhouse located just off Grafton Street, this filly was just behind Azores on her latest start and looks the type that will have benefitted from that experience.
Kevin Ryan has a more than healthy 30% strike rate here at Dundalk and he has a chance with the Beverley winner Key Breeze in the ten furlong handicap at 8.50.Flavia Tatiana is another potential play as is the lightly weighted Total Excitement who makes the long journey up from Tralee to contest this race.
Racing concludes with the twelve furlong handicap a race where track specialist Denny Crane, the Harry Rogers mare Strandfield Lady and the recent course winner Elizabeth Coffee all have chances.
