SPOTY Update

Now England didn’t do the full business at the Euros, that rules out the footy players for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The last singles winner for the UK at Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the Silver Jubilee year. Can Andy Murray come up trumps in the Diamond Jubilee year? I don’t think so, as he never seems to be able to produce on the biggest stage. I hope I’m proved wrong and, like Spain in the footy, once he breaks his duck he’ll be away and running racking up the majors.

If he does finally win Wimbledon he will be one of the favourites for SPOTY. The Olympians are obviously runners. Tom Daley with a gold could do the trick or anyone who caps a lifetime’s achievement with an Olympic gold.

Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour De France and an Olympic Gold could well take the prize. I’ve got a feeling Radcliffe could be a bet at 50/1 as finally winning Olympic gold will seem like justice. Hopefully, we’ll be in for one of those years when there are several possible winners, and with a few ladies in the mix as well unlike last year.
