The BCS National Championship Game

Yet again it looks like Alabama will make it to another BCS Championship game and as it has been over the past few years when a team from the SEC faces a team from an alternate conference more often than not the SEC team will be favourite especially when that team is Alabama.

It is not too surprising that Alabama will probably make it to the Championship game however what is quite surprising is the route they took to get there. I think in the minds of most people Alabama were undefeatable and many including myself thought that they would go undefeated. However that was not the case. In reality Alabama have Stanford and more importantly Baylor to thank for their amazing wins over Oregon and K State respectively in week 12. Perhaps some people may have envisaged Stanford beating Oregon even though on game day there were a 20 point underdog but for Baylor to beat K State was a true miracle in the real sense on the word.

Alabama will be praising God that they will most probably make the Championship game in such a dramatic and unlikely fashion. I should point out that the BCS is not set in stone as yet. Alabama will have to defeat a pretty good Georgia team in the SEC Championship game but they are favourites to do so and I think that they are the superior team so they should be able to capture the SEC title. If Alabama can beat Georgia and make the Championship game they will play an undefeated Notre Dame team.

Notre Dame has been impressive at times and of course they are undefeated so that does speak in their favour. However the fighting Irish have had to win three overtime games against very weak teams in order to go undefeated and their offense has been extremely average over the course of the year. Notre Dame’s defence however has been excellent but a major worry for them going into a Championship game against Alabama will be that the Crimson Tide are number one in overall defence in college football and getting into a defensive battle with the best defence in the league probably isn’t the best way to win a game. That being said with Notre Dame’s offensive worries they will have no choice but to hope that there defence can match that of Alabama’s. It is quite possible that this game could mimic that of last year’s Championship game between LSU and Alabama. With that in mind it might be worthwhile keeping an eye on the total points for the game once the line goes up and perhaps taking a chance on the under in what will most likely be a battle of the trenches.
