Taking the low road at Carlisle

A glance at the Carlisle card on Tuesday produces very little in the way of solid betting options and the expectation must be for close finishes.

The Cumbrian course often provides drama inside the final furlong and I’d generally be short on the distance front.

Five of the seven races are handicaps and the field sizes have held up well.

It was only last month that the course produced a make-up on the distances of just four from six races.

Their latest meeting last Monday produced a bigger make-up of 12 but that was on their lady riders only night when there is always the chance of a wide margin winner.

The course has an uphill finish which can often produce a close finish even when horses are clear in the final furlong their energies can sap.

I’m predicting a make-up of just 7 lengths so am more than likely to be selling on the spreads and hoping to hear one word repeatedly during the afternoon.
