Our daily columnist and pundit S.P. Read Esq. looks ahead to racing this afternoon at ASCOTand finds the best opportunities available on Star Spreads, the home of sports spread betting.

SPreadThere maybe trouble ahead…. or at least rain ahead of the King George card at Ascot on Saturday.

There’s been light rain this morning and the question is how much more will come and whether it will be enough to rule out long odds-on Golden Horn (pictured) in the feature race.

The going is currently good but connections are nervous that the ground will move against Golden Horn (around a 4/7 chance) who has run out an impressive winner of both the Derby and the Coral-Eclipse so far this season.

Trainer John Gosden told www.godolphin.com: “I have been asked whether we are going to the well too often. My answer is that I am more worried about the forecast of rain at Ascot on Saturday than any fear that we might be overfacing him. I think he will be all right if it is good to soft’ but we will be in unknown territory on soft ground.”

In his absence the race would certainly become more competitive from a punting point of view with the Hardwicke Stakes winner and second Snow Sky and Eagle Top likely to be disputing favouritism.

At Ascot today the rain softened ground leans me towards buying distances at 14 with Star Spreads – there’s also a two mile race on the card which has potential for a decent make-up.
