A home win for Newcastle might well be considered topsy-turvy too given the respective recent form from both sides.
Newcastle are in turmoil and have only won two league games so far this season contributing to their current 19th of 20 Premier League position. Mini-recent revivals from Sunderland and Bournemouth have heaped further pressure on the Toon Army.
Newcastle’s boss Steve McClaren seems to be running out of explanations for the downfall: “It looks like, from the outside, they are not trying, they are not running, they are not working. I thought that and we looked at the stats and they are exactly the same. But it looks like they are not trying.”
Liverpool will move into a share of 5th place with a win today and only a home loss to Crystal Palace has blotted a winning run of eight matches across all competitions.
The bad news for Newcastle is that Liverpool have picked up more points on the road than at home this season. The Reds are likely to be again without Philippe Coutinho who has missed the last three matches with a hamstring problem. Daniel Sturridge could make his first league start for two months.
For Newcastle, Mike Williamson will miss the game and Cheick Tiote has failed to recover from a groin strain.
