At 2-0 to Liverpool you could argue the case that the tie was still perfectly poised but at 3-0 it’s definitely advantage Liverpool – even more so when you factor in the effects of an away goal. Liverpool are 1/7 with starsports.bet to qualify for the semi-finals.

City need to be out of the traps quickly but not recklessly – a goal every 30 minutes will be enough to take the tie into injury time, providing of course that they don’t concede. A Liverpool goal would mean three becomes five for City and surely that’s a mountain too far?

City are strong at the Etihad – they have won 13 of their last 15 home matches and beat Liverpool 5-0 in the league here in September so they have every reason to retain confidence that they can climb this European hill.

Manager Pep Guardiola certainly believes so as he, by virtue of team selection, put the Premier League title party on ice on Saturday with tonight being the priority.

His counterpart Jurgen Klopp is playing down the significance of City’s last two defeats in the context of tonight. He said: “No, I didn’t think anything like that.

“You have always the chance to respond and to strike back.

“When we lost here 5-0 at the beginning of the season, everybody saw the quality of City even when we were one man down.

“I am not interested in the favourites label.

“This is again a big test for both teams and I’m really interested to see how we cope with that.”

A key late fitness check on Mohamed Salah is clearly going to be a massive factor on the game. Salah has scored eight Champions League goals this season is recovering from a groin injury but did train with his team-mates yesterday.
