It wasn’t that long ago that ‘The Quadruple’ was being talked about in around about 16/1 terms for Man City this season.

That was before hopes were exterminated, in unlikely fashion, by Wigan in the FA Cup and the chances of ‘The Treble’ now look remote after the midweek Champions League events an Anfield this week.

With the EFL Cup in the bag and the league title a formality, when rather than if,  ’The Double’ looks the most likely prize for 2017/18.

City can clinch the title on Saturday against arch rivals Man United – assuming of course they can bounce back from looking shell-shocked in the Champions League.

And bounce back they will need to, for all Liverpool were electric, especially in the first half, City looked a side that were jaded and Man U will surely fancy their chances of reversing the 2-1 defeat subjected to them at Old Trafford in December if similar vulnerabilities are exposed on Saturday.

City manager Pep Guardiola still has eyes on Tuesday’s second leg at Liverpool and no doubt feels the job can still be done.

He said: “We have three massive games, United, Liverpool and Tottenham. We have just a few days between each game.

“We have to see the condition of the players. We’ll pick a team to win the game against United… we have one eye on Tuesday though.

“I’d rather be facing United with a better result than we had [in midweek]. We must adapt, though. The result against United will help emotionally to prepare for the game on Tuesday.”

It will be interesting to see if Guardiola opts to rest some key players – which given they can win the title would be pretty extraordinary, but understandable given the maths of the Premier League table and the pressure to reach a Champions League semi-final.

Sergio Aguero, even if back to full fitness after his knee injury, may be saved until Tuesday.

Man U’s only absentee is injured goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
