We’ve had only one week of the Premier League season but it’s safe to say that fans of Liverpool and Crystal Palace will have been encouraged by their opening weekend performances.
Liverpool, second favourites for the league this season, started with a statement of intent with a 4-0 thrashing of West Ham at Anfield. Starting where they left off last season, they were relentless from beginning to end and the Hammers, who played a high line, were carved open by the dynamic front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah. They scored three of the four goals with a quick goal for Daniel Sturridge to add some icing onto the cake too.
Even more exciting for the scousers was the standout performance of Naby Keita, the roaming midfielder whose debut had been anticipated for over a year. He broke up counter attacks, added another outlet for attacking play and also was excellent on the counter when Liverpool had the ball, hopefully setting up a big season.
Crystal Palace were marginal outsiders for their clash with big spending Fulham last week and impressed in using their experience and organisation to outfox the hosts. Wayne Hennessy had to make some very important saves to prevent them from taking the lead but their rear-guard led expert by James Tomkins, was extremely well organised and both he and Patrick van Aanholt had an excellent game, picking up where he left off last season. An inspired Aaron Wan-Bissaka also made Ryan Sessegnon have a difficult afternoon.
Liverpool will obviously be a difficult kettle of fish. Fulham had eight new signings making their debut for the first time last weekend on their first game in the Premier League since coming back up and this Liverpool side has a front three equal with any in club football with most of the side knowing each other well – Naby Keita and Alisson didn’t have much trouble integrating last weekend.
However, they will present a tougher defensive test for the visitors with the high line West Ham employed likely to be a thing of the past and heads won’t drop with an early goal either. Palace’s home record is not to be sniffed at and they were hard work for the Big Six last season – they lost to Arsenal, Manchester City and United, Tottenham and Liverpool themselves by just one goal and they also drew with Manchester City to boot.
