There can simply be no excuse.Missing the action from Fairyhouse on Sunday is unforgivable.No passes will be issued for shopping trips,dancing classes,talent competitions or gymkhanas.It’s your duty to be there. Seven quality races featuring three grade one events ,The Royal Bond at 12.50,the Hatton’s Grace at 1.20 and the Drinmores’ at 1.50.Quality all the way !
Racing opens with the juvenile hurdle at 12.20 a weight division Ireland has been sadly lacking in talent over the past few years. Plenty of complicated form lines link the main protagonist’s in this race but of those that have shown winning form, One Cool Shabra looks the pick. Argocat runs in Fitri Hay’s familiar colours and is her first horse with Tom Taaffe .Another interesting contender is the O’Grady trained Tugboat ,who picked up a flat maiden a few month’s back when in the care of John Oxx.
The Royal Bond at 12.50 is an early opportunity to see how our novices are progressing. Sous Le Cieux looked exceptional when winning his maiden here a few weeks back,Il Fenomeno landed quite a gamble in graded company at Navan on his latest start while Galileo’s Choice won a group three on the flat just last month.Some reputations are going to be dashed after this!
Gigginstown have a strong hand in the Drinmore Chase at 1.20 with the Navan winner Bog Warrior,the Cheltenham festival winner First Lieutenant and the recent Thurles winner Rivage D’Or.First Lieutenant looks to have a touch of class about him and he just gets the vote with Bog Warrior nominated as the danger.
The Hatton’s Grace at 1.50 is a race that celebrates the career of the Vincent O’Brien trained hurdler who won three in a row Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham in 1949 and 1950 (The Brab’) and 1951 (Tim Maloney).Just the five runners and no Thousand Stars but a fascinating contest none the less with the fast improving The Real Article a horse that can ,after all those months,reopen painful old wounds.When I think of how much I stood to win in The Galway Hurdle when he was thrown in with a pitchfork off a ridiculous 127 rating. As Doctor Phil would say ,you really do need closure .The Real Article has his chance today but will do well to cope with the Volar La Vedette who ,in receipt of the mares allowance will be hard to beat here.
A valuable mares handicap is next up at 2.20.It looks very competitive with the hat trick seeking Miss Pepperpot,the improving Gowran winner Cloughmile and Colin Bowe’s Our Victoria all in with chances.
The long distance handicap chase has 2.50 has attracted a big field where, if there are sixteen runners or more, those generous bookmakers will pay the first four places. Each way is most definitely the way forward here then.Smoking Aces has a chance as has the lightly raced Sang Bleu, a horse that finished a decent third over an inadequate trip at Punchestown on his latest start.
Racing concludes with the two mile bumper where Bright New Dawn (Dessie Hughes) and Sizing Italy (Jim Dreaper) are new comers to note. Thomas Edison has had a run when finishing a useful third in a Down Royal bumper on his only start to date while in receipt of the mares allowance Tile Lady is another to consider.
