Fairyhouse
Seven races at Fairyhouse on Thursday for their innovative Solheim Cup-themed day. According to the weather forecasters it might just be the day to take the wraps off that garish cerise golf brolly you got last Christmas; don’t worry about standing out in the crowd- everyone is sure to have one!
Enough of this frivolous nonsense and on to the important business of boosting the bank balance by backing a few winners. Steps To Freedom is an Aintree winner who stands out in the opening maiden hurdle. It is his first time over timber but, if he lifts a leg, he should be good enough to collect here. Locally-trained Leceile could be the forecast alternative, or each way steal, depending on your betting preferences.
The veteran Muirhead returned to winning ways at Ballinrobe last month and could follow up in the conditions hurdle, a race where Listowel winner Plan A appeals as the preferred alternative.
The winners’ novices hurdle is next up and what a race this could turn out to be! The reality is all of the field can be given chances, but preference here is for the easy Killarney winner Sizing Symphony; next best is Willie Mullins entry Pickapocketortwo, who took all his time to win a three-miler at Sligo on his last outing.
The first of our handicap hurdles looks difficult, to say the least, but Jim Nash has got a nice tune out of Star Of Aragon who is lurking with intent, dangerously close to the foot of the handicap. Consideration can also be given to Ionisphere, who had a nice run to finish second on the flat at Dundalk earlier this month.
On to division one of the two-and-half mile handicap where, once again, punters face a difficult task in pinpointing the winner. Kilbeggan winner Sister Stevie is expected to give a good account, while a big market watch is recommended when assessing the chances of the Charles Byrne’s entry, Seaside Shuffle.
Division two of this handicap looks equally perilous, however Giant Sequoia, who landed a nice touch at Clonmel on his last run, can reasonably be expected to defy his penalty in this company. Watch also for handicap debutante Sun Fisher, who showed enough on his last start to suggest he could be a force to be reckoned with in this type of race.
Racing closes with the bumper where maximum respect must be afforded to the Noel Meade entry Wall Street Wally, who will surely come on for his encouraging debut run at Galway. Tom Taaffe’s Alexandr Nevsky is another for the short list, having caught the eye on his one and only start to date at Sligo.
