Captain’s Blog Premiership Review 2 (2/2)
If you haven’t read it yet, check out Part 1 for the early games.
In the last of the 3 o’clock kickoffs, West Brom unluckily come away defeated against Spurs. Mulumbu put Brom ahead after 10, but the lead only lasted another 15 minutes before Adebayor struck home. From then, up until the 80th minute, West Brom’s work rate was amazing, they were working their socks off. But they couldn’t keep it up, they tired and Tottenham capitalized and scored 2 in the last 10 minutes, another from Adebayor and one from Defoe. West Brom showed positive signs here, and i believe they won’t have any problems this season with their hard working attitude. As for Spurs, they seem to be going from strength to strength and are real contenders for the title.
Arsenal
In the late game, Arsenal’s winning streak was brought to a halt by Fulham at the Emirates. Thomas Vermaelen was the key man today and netted twice, once for Arsenal and once for Fulham! Fulham kept Arsenal at bay for most of the game and will be coming away delighted with this 1-1 draw away from home. You can’t help but think Arsenal were hungover from the Champions League midweek as the squad just weren’t 100% today. Arsenal will try to put this game behind them and get back to winning ways.
Swansea
In the early Sunday game, Swansea and Villa played out a very poor stalemate. A fair result for both sides, neither of which were better than the other. The only real threats of the match came from Agbonlahor, who was constantly working and making a nuisance of himself, and Scott Sinclair who worked tirelessly (trying to redeem himself after last weeks miss). The match was overshadowed by the death of Welshmen, Gary Speed. They paid tribute to the 42 year old at the start of the match with a moment’s silence.
City-Liverpool
The last game of the weekend was undoubtedly the biggest! Man City travelled to Anfield to face a new look Liverpool side who have been getting results. Man City started the better of the two and broke the deadlock with a header from the captain, Kompany. It was less than two minutes before Liverpool got a goal back, through former Everton centre back, Joleon Lescott. Into the second half, the game picked up and it got a bit heated, with Balotelli seeing red after only being on the pitch 18 minutes! City played out the rest of the game with ten men and held firm against a pressing Liverpool side. As I said in the preview, I fancied Liverpool to get one over on City, and they could have, if Joe Hart hadn’t have pulled off a miraculous injury time save from an Andy Carroll shot. After this result, Liverpool will have gained even more confidence and could become a real force in the league while Man City were shown to be ordinary.
