NFL Thoughts – MVP

Well the 2012-2013 NFL season is less than a week away and excitement at Star Spreads HQ here in Dublin is at boiling point.

I’ve been known to dabble in some NFL betting over the years, so this week I’m going to hit you with four NFL betting previews. I’ll look at the AFC, the NFC, the MVP race and finally some various player props.

Today I’d like to look at the MVP betting. I’ll have a look at the top few in the field and try to sort through which of the high profile QBs has the best shot.

Aaron Rodgers – Hard to see past this kid. He’s the best player at the most important position for the best team.

Tom Brady – Very similar situation to Rodgers. He plays on the second best team and has perhaps lost a step since his prime in 2007. But he’s the league’s glamour boy and is endlessly marketable.

Drew Brees – Very hard to see a member of the Saints winning any awards with the bounty scandal hanging over them. Not for me.

Michael Vick – I suppose if the Eagles have a monster season he could pull it off. But he’s also one tainted by scandal (the dogfighting incident) and if he starts all sixteen games I’ll eat my hat. I’ll leave it just now.

Matthew Stafford – Now here’s an interesting one. NFL fans love a young QB making a breakthrough and Stafford seems like a good egg. He also puts up crazy number and is worth an outside poke.

Peyton Manning – No doubt the voters would love to see Manning walk away with some silverware, but two things worry me. 1) surely if he has a good year, the Comeback Player of the Year award makes more sense? 2) Much as with Vick, I really can’t see him starting all 16 games and with the like of Brady, Rodgers and Brees putting up huge numbers, I think he’l struggle.

Eli Manning / Ben Roethlisberger / Matt Schuab / Tony Romo etc – the prices might look attractive, but these rags never win. Stick to either (or both) of the top two in the market and you won’t go far wrong.
