It’s not that long ago that Chelsea v Derby was a regular top flight fixture and the way Derby are going in the Championship this season it might well again be soon enough.

They have made a solid start to the season – but were knocked off top spot at the weekend when losing to Middlesbrough and are now in third.

Such is the financial pressure on promotion from Championship to Premier League that you would think Derby boss Steve McClaren is unlikely to have too many sleepless nights if his side exit the Capital One Cup tonight – especially when Chelsea are the visitors.

Of course with a punting hat on, you could also make exactly the same argument about Chelsea who are about to embark on a run of six games in just 20 days.

Bottom line though is a sub-strength Chelsea side should still be way good enough to see off a sub-strength Derby side which, in effect, is what we might be talking about.
