10 to follow for the jumps (Part 2)
Bygones Sovereign 6-y-o gelding Trainer: David Pipe
Not one of his trainer’s leading lights but I fancy he will improve bundles when stepped up in trip this season. This lightly raced bay was unfortunate not to get his head in front last season finishing runner-up on both starts to useful types but I don’t envisage it being too long before he makes his mark, especially once his astute trainer steps him up markedly in trip.
Montbazon 5-y-o gelding Trainer: Alan King
Not far off the best Novice hurdlers around last season which culminated in a close 4th in the Supreme at Cheltenham. To my mind he was far from the finished article last season and reportedly suffered from sore shins also, taking everything into account I think I is safe to mark down Montbazon as a seriously talented hurdler and I expect him to make his mark at the highest level this season.
Arvika Ligeonniere 7-y-o gelding Trainer: Willie Mullins (Ir)
This strong, powerful gelding has long been on the Judge’s radar. He returned from a long layoff through injury to win his Chase debut very impressively and I am confident big things await.
First Lieutenant 7-y-o gelding Trainer: Mouse Morris (Ir)
Regular readers will know I am a massive fan of Mouse Morris’ gelding and he so nearly gave me a payday to remember when running a huge race to finish 2nd to Bobs Worth in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham. Don’t be surprised to see him targeted at more races in the UK this season as the deep winter ground he encounters in Ireland makes It difficult for him to show his best.
Kazlian 4-y-o gelding Trainer: David Pipe
Travelled like the winner for a long way in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham before weakening on the run in to finish 4th. Was possibly feeling the effects of his festival exertions when disappointing on his final start but l expect lots of improvement this season especially as his trainer excels with this type of horse.
